The birds used in these plants were, with one important exception, raised and released by the state game farms, principally those at Yount- ville and Los Serranos. Due to the extreme difficulty of raising birds of pure wild ancestry in captivity, the game farm stocks of turkeys were of hybrid origin, resulting from crosses between the domestic turkey and one or more of the wild subspecies. Apparently the latter were mainly the Mexican turkey (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo) and the Merriam turkey (31. g. merriami) of the Southwest.
