When sixteenyears of age he went to New Bedford. Mass., where he en-tered the apprenticeship of Prince Weeks, a master finishing his apprenticeship he worked at organ build-ing in the employ of a Boston firm. Later he shipped as acarpenter on an East India merchantman. From India he went to California when the gold feverwas at its height. He crossed the Isthmus of Panama onfoot, arriving in San Francisco soon after the fire. erected some of the first brick structures in San Fran-cisco, some of which are still standing. INlr. Nye returned to New Bedford
