Ovarian follicles. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary, showing primordial follicles. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). Primordial follicles are the earliest stage of follicular development, part of a process called folliculogenesis that parallels the development of the female sex cells, resulting in ovulation and the release of an ovum from the mature follicle.
