Young Russian soldiers riding in the back of a military vehicle as part of a Russian convoy from Dushanbe (Tajikistan capital) to the southern khatlon region, on the Afghanistan border. The civil war, often referred to as “the forgotten civil war” continued for five years with between 35,000 and 157,000 people killed. Pictured are soldiers of the 201st Motorized Rifle Division, the division has been deployed in Tajikistan since Soviet Times and officially ordered to remain neutral. The civil war ended with a UN-brokered peace accord between Tajikistan’s secular government and a coalition of opposition groups.
