Houses in New Lanark belonging to David Dale and Robert Owen founders and managers of the mills and community in the village. One house can be visited
New Lanark was founded by David Dale and his son-in-law Robert Owen as a pioneering project to demonstrate that it was possible to run a successful business while treating their employees well. As well as jobs in the mills, they provided housing, education for the children, & free health care. The mills closed in 1968 and the village fell into disrepair as people moved away, but it has since been restored by the New Lanark Trust and now has a population of some 200. It is now mainly a tourist attraction and has a visitor centre and events for people to enjoy.
