The original chessmen were found near Uig on the Isle of Lewis in about 1831 and of the 93 found which are thought to be from four sets 82 are in the British Museum and 11 are in the National Museum of Scotland. The are thought to be of Norse origin and made around the eleventh century from Walrus ivory and whale teeth
