So quietly did Quay manage his campaign againstIrwin that Mackey w^as not publicly discussed untilabout the time that the Legislature met, but as thesenators and representatives gathered in Harrisburgit w^as soon discovered that Mackey was a very formid-able candidate, and long before the caucus met Irwinwas hopelessly distanced in the race.
