On the escape of the ovum, the ruptured and partly-collapsedfollicle becomes filled with the blood poured out from the torn vesselsof the walls of the vesicle ; subsequent changes lead to the conver-sion of the follicle into a corpus luteum. The production of thesecharacteristic bodies depends principally upon the jDroliferation ofthe walls of the follicle, in some cases the interstitial cells being in-volved; the process results in the plication of the remains of theenvelope, as well as in the gradual formation of a mass of polyhedralcells, between which the capillaries derived from the vessels of thefollicle extend ; the enclosed area corresponds to the remains of thecavity of the follicle, and is for a time occupied with the yellowishmass composed of the degenerating blood-clot and the membranagranulosa ; these tissues are replaced by a shrunken fibrous area, which is later invaded by the proliferating peripheral cells. When THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS. 229 Fig. Portion of well-developed corpus luteum fromovary of rabbit: a, polyhedral cells separatedby vascular connective tissue; 6, blood-vessel. best developed, the corpus luteum is sharply defined from the sur-rounding stroma, and in appearance recalls somewhat the liver, thepolygonal cells being surrounded by capillary blood-vessels. Subse-quent changes lead to retrogressionand disappearance of the cells, theentire mass becoming fibrous andcicatrfcial in character, but remain-ing visible for many months asan obscure, shrunken, irregularly-plicated body in the midst of thecortical tissues. While the forma-tion of a corpus luteum follows thedischarge of every mature ovum, when such escape is followed bypregnancy the yellow body be-comes exceptionally large and welldeveloped, presenting a large roundmass, 2-3 cm. in diameter, whichretains its distinctive character muchmore tenaciously tha
