Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771), Scottish artist. Parkinson travelled on and died during Captain James Cook's first voyage around the world (1768-1771). Parkinson is most famous for the illustrations he made during that voyage, though some of his collected works date from before that time. This oil-on-board painting, probably a self-portrait, dates from circa 1770. Original held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
