He was commissioned major general of volun-teers, November 29th, 1862 ; succeeded General Hooker in command ofthe First Corps of the Army of the Potomac ; was engaged at Fredericks-burg, and at Gettysburg he was struck by a rifle ball and GENERAL GODFREY WEITZEL. General Weitzel, born in Cincinnati, 0., November 1st, 1835. died inPhiladelphia, Pa., March 19th, 1884. was graduated from the UnitedStates Military Academy in 1855 ; became first lieutenant of engineers in1860, and was attached to the staff of General Butler as chief engineerof the Department of the Gulf. After the capture of New Orleans hebecame assistant military commander and acting mavor of the city. Hewas commissioned brigadier general of volunteers, Anofiist 29th, 1862 ; cap-tain of engineers, March 3d, 1863 ; on July 8th, 1863, he was brevettedlieutenant colonel. United States Army, for. gallant services at the siege ofPort Hudson. He joined the Western Louisiana campaign, and from Maytill September, 1864, was chief engineer of the Army of the James. InAugust, 1864, he was brevetted major general of volunteers. General Strong, born in Stockbridge, Vt., October 16th, 1832, died inNew York city, July 30th, 1863, was graduated at the United StatesMilitar
