Close-up of the buttock of a 7 month old baby during an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A rash with blisters and scabs has appeared which is extremely painful, due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster). Dormant viruses can survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by illness or old age.
