Entrance to the mosque was restricted by Israeli police following violent Palestinian demonstrations against Israeli excavations near the Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the Rock is the third holiest site in Islam and is purported to be the site from where the prophet Mohammed ascended to Heaven.
