Ipresent herewith two photographic re-productions of one of these moth cater-pillars. The photographic plate caughtthe caterpillar while feeding on a half-eaten dogwood leaf. The initial photo-graph shows the same individual which, having taken alarm and stopped its feed-ing process, had backed off along themid-rib of the leaf, where it remainedmotionless. In the first position thiscaterpillars form was most diflBcult tomake out. Its brown and green bodypresented the exact counterpart of awithered brown blotch on the dogwoodleaf. Moreover, this resemblance wasso perfect that the scrutiny of several uninformed persons, who were asked to examine it, failed in identifying it. This deception is brought about by the adaptation of bothform and color. The back or dorsal outline, being formedinto tubercles and elevations, gives to the larva the effect ofbeing part of the eaten leaf itself, with an irregularly excavated PROTECTIVE RESEMBLANCE, WITH EX/VMPLES 111. A case of prukdice resemblance both in form and color. The caterpillar Schizura ipcjmeoe is feeding an a dogwood leaf, and is the same as that shoivn in the initial figure. This larva is brown with a green pattern behind the head simulating the color of the leaf, the brown color resembling a dead portion of the leaf. 112 NATURE SKETCHES IN TEMPERATE AMERICA edge. Behind the head on the three thoracic segments is agreen pattern, which causes this portion to blend with thecolor of the leaf. With a view to learning something further of the life historyof this interesting caterpillar, I took it indoOrs on July readily ate dogwood leaves supplied to it until the fourthday; then it became restless, refusing to eat further. It keptmoving about on the wooden bottom of the vivarium, butmade no att
