The patient was in extremis at the time of operation,with evidences of hypostasis. By the second day the proximalbowel had emptied itself, and he had improved sufficiently tomake me think it advisable to remove the remaining portionsof the necrotic intestine. This was done under local anaesthesia,and gave so little discomfort that the opening into the abdomen
