Optics of corrective lenses. 18th-century diagrams on optics, showing the path of light through corrective lenses. The path of light through such lenses and into the human eye is shown in cross-section at bottom. The earliest eyeglasses date to the 13th century. These diagrams were published in 'A Compleat System of Opticks' (1738) by English mathematician Robert Smith (1689-1768).
