The Massif des Maures in the Alpes du Sud region of France

The Massif des Maures ("plateau of the Moors") is a small mountain range in southeastern France. It is located in the department of Var, near Fraxinet and between Hyères and Fréjus. Its highest point at Signal de la Sauvette is 780 m high. The Maures Massif has a lot to offer visitors. First there are the diverse landscapes of maquis shrub land, stone pines and forests of chestnut trees and cork oaks. All are ideal for a nice walk, bike ride or horse ride. Then there are pretty villages fragrant with the scents of Provence like Collobrières and La Garde-Freinet. The Maures Massif is also home to abundant protected animal species like Hermann's tortoise. Squirrels, badgers, lizards, tawny owls, Eurasian eagle-owls and peregrine falcons share this preserved environment.
