The Synod has animmense home mis-sion field embracingat present (1906)nearly all the statesand territories of theUnion and most ofthe provinces and ter-ritories of greater part ofthis work is donethrough the missionboards of the variousconferences, the central mission board of the synodhaving charge of such fields as lie outside of the boundsof the conferences. Rosenius and the rise of the Walden-stromian heresy in Sweden, the doctrine of the atone-ment was earnestly discussed and carefully studied byboth pastors and people. This led to a deeper andclearer insight into the Word of God and has borneblessed fruit throughout the Synod. The name Augustana was suggested by Rev., afterwards Dr.,Eric Norelius. It was a most appropriate name as it gave expres-sion to the sound doctrinal position of the Synod (The AugsburgConfession is known in Latin as the Confessio Augustana).
