Phrynohyas venulosa, a toad tree frog, found in tropical Central & South America & on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. This male is seen here with its vocal sacs fully inflated in the middle of calling. P. venulosa has a pair of lateral vocal sacs, which are filled with air & serve to amplify the sound emitted by the frog. The breeding chorus lasts for a few nights during wet weather at the start of the rainy season. The males call from vegetation at the edge of pools of water. Spawning takes place when a mature female responds to the call. Calling also communicates other social & territorial information. The frog bears powerful poison glands.
