Minute Men of 61 Company I, Fifth Massachusetts Regiment Joseph J. Giles was born in vSomerville,Mass., March 24, 1,S42, he being the firstchild born in vSomerville after it was setapart from Charlestown. He was educatedin the public schools of his native early life, he served three j-ears appren-tice to Joseph Y. Twombly, learning thehouse painting trade. He left the benchin April, 1S61, and enlisted for threemonths in Company I, Fifth MassachusettsVolunteers, under Captain George , and participated in the first bat-tle of Bull Run. At the expiration of thisservice he returned home, and in 1H62 heassisted in recruiting f(jr three years, theSomerville Guard, of which he was com- missioned its First L/ieutenant. The Com-pany became Company R, of the
