Human skull. Computer artwork of an X-ray of the facial bones of a normal human skull in lateral (side) view, superimposed on a profile of a human face. The frontal bone (upper centre) of the cranium forms the forehead or brow above the eye sockets. The facial skeleton (centre) comprises the nasal, cheek and the upper and lower jaw bones. The jaw bones contain 32 teeth in adults. The head is supported by the neck (bottom), which also supplies blood to the head and nerves to the rest of the body. The first two cervical vertebrae (backbone segments) are specialised: the atlas holds the head on top of the vertebral column, and the axis allows the head to pivot.
