King John (1166-1216). 1864 illustration of the English monarch King John. John was King of England from 6th April 1199 until his death in 1216. John is best known as the ruling Monarch at the signing of the Magna Carta on 15th June 1215. The Magna Carta, the Great Charter of English liberties, established the principle that the King was subject to the law and limited the power he had over his barons.
