Nor shallI say much of inscriptions in or on churches ; they arenearly always texts of Scripture applicable as well toone church as another. And though I cannot entirelypass by all foreign mottoes, I shall chiefly notice themwhere they either supplement or explain mottoesfound in England, or where they have some excellence ^ George Chapmans translation, in 1614, is almost as good : We should a guest love, while he loves to stay, And, when he hkes not, give him loving HOUSE MOTTOES 261 that deserves special notice ; though in many partsof Europe house mottoes are far more abundant thanin England, especially in Italy, Switzerland, Tyrol andGermany. And of the English mottoes I may saythat most of them have been collected and copiedeither by myself or by trustworthy friends, and I havefound very little help in books. From Notes and QueriesI have been able to gather some, and about two yearsago a book was published under the title of HouseMottoes and Inscriptions, Old and New, by S. F. Caul-field ; it was rather a pretty book, but the inscriptionswere not many, and the authoress ignorance of Latinled her into many mistakes ; and I have found verylittle help from it.
