WWI, Student Army Training Corps, 1918
Vocational training for (Student Army Training Corps) in University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Class in Pole-Climbing in the course for telephone electricians, with some of their instructors. Early in 1918 the federal government polled universities throughout the country in order to determine the schools' capacities to train members of the army in various technical skills. The University of Michigan responded that it could accommodate 200 soldiers, and in April 1918 a detachment of 200 Students' Army Training Corps was sent to Ann Arbor for a two month training program. At the program's peak, the university absorbed 3,600 army students, largely disrupting the normal academic functions of the school. Housing and feeding such a large number of soldiers proved extremely difficult. With the signing of the armistice which ended active hostilities, the SATC program was disbanded.
