Dinslaken, Voerde, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Inauguration of the new Emscher estuary into the Rhine. In the back the decommissioned STEAG coal-fired power plant Voerde. The mouth of the Emscher into the Rhine was moved from Dinslaken to Voerde, almost 500 meters to the north. Fish can now swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
