On the endof the axle under the chain wheel the bear-ing cone is part of the axle and turned onit. On the other end the cone is screwedon to the axle before the disc on that sideis fixed. To slacken the bearing this coneis screwed in; to tighten it is screwed is a development of an American hubwhich Mr. Harry James, of Birmingham. bought in 1893. This is Mr. Jamess hub, and, as will be seen, is very similar to theHall. A, Al being the discs jambed into thehub barrel, with left and right hand threads,B being the adjusting cone working on theaxle F. In the original hub purchased byJames the axle was split, screwed and tele-scoped, the adjustment being arrived at bylengthening or shortening the axle. This is a hub, to market which a verywealthy syndicate has been formed and whose connection with Humber & Co. causesme to prophesy that it will probably befound on Humber machines next year. Theinventor is Mr. George Price, of Chester. A—Is a cone screwed by right hand threadto collar on spindle. B—Cup screwed infohub mouth by right hand thread to reachballs. C—Primary locking ring screwed intosame thread of hub mouth, as cup B, lock-ing cup B from backward movement, andfor adjustment. D—Secondary locking ring, screwed by left hand thread on extendedshoulder of cup B, passing through apertureof primary locki
