The chapel is ahandsome gothic structure, on the west side of the river, and was rebuilt in the year 1823,at a cost of £1,300. The manor formerly belonged to the ancient family of Burnshead, with whose heiressit passed to the Bellinghams, and thence to the Braithwaites, who sold it out of theirpossession. The hall, which is a fine old ruin, is occupied by a farmer. In 169*2, thisstructure- consisted of a court with a lodge and battlements, through which was theascent into the hall. Before the court was a large pond on each side of the passage tothe gate; and on either side a small island, with a tree planted in the midst; and in thewindows of the gallery and dining-room were the Braithwaites arms, with impalings ofthe several families to which they were
