Abyssinia corresponds in part with ancientEthiopia. Its boundaries, formerly vague, were de-fined by treaties in 1906-07 so that it is shut off fromthe Red Sea and tiie Gulf of Aden by the Italian de-pendency of Eritrea and by French Somali Coastand British Soraaliland.
