Theroad now runs beneath the ruins of Burg Laudeckand along a valley dotted with sharp-pointed steeplesand steep-roofed houses. Recrossing the river by asolid stone bridge, we commenced to ascend theFinstermunz Pass; the road, taking a long slant upthe side of the valley, is broad, and well made, witha gradient extremely easy. Although the summit is5000 feet above the sea, the climb is nothing, butthe scenery is exceedingly beautiful. Where thevalley takes a wide, circular bend, the road naturallyfollows suit and at this point reaches Hoch Flnster-miinz, a small cluster of houses 500 feet above theBiver Inn. Here we elected to stay, for the nightwas fast closing in. Our rooms faced a valleybordered by great rocky heights, the home of thewild eaofle and other feathered lords of the morning I was awakened by the cracked bellof a midget chapel which stands opposite the hotel, and* as the sun was shining brightly, banished allsleep into another world, and dressing quickly,112. r. H \\\ WHERE HEROES TROD descended for breakfast. I was joined soon after bythe rest, who also had risen betimes at the commandof the tiny chapel. It was therefore early when weleft the hospitable little hotel and continued the easyroad. About half a mile further, on a projectingrock, stands a metal figure of a chamois from whicha splendid view into the valley is obtained. Theroad then passes through a tunnel or two and turnsto the left, entering a narrow little defile, passingbeneath the shadow of a square-shaped fort, whichstands upon the banks of a noisy waterfall. Wind-ing higher, the road quits the tiny valley, and aftera series of wide turns reaches the summit, a longflat plateau commanding a magnificent view of thesnowy Ortler Range, our old friend standing outclear and imposing. Upon the summit of the pass are three lakes, eachof different colour, green, brown and grey.
