Wounded duellist. Medical care being provided for a wounded duellist (seated) in Heidelberg, Germany. Student societies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, engaged in a tradition in the late-19th and early-20th century known as academic (mensur) fencing. These duels used swords, and sometimes padding (seen here). The fight ended when blood was drawn. Physicians were present to tend to the wounds, though the resulting scars were seen as a badge of honour. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. Its photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
