Diverticular disease. Contrast barium enema X-ray of the large intestine (colon) of a patient with diverticulosis or CDD (colonic diverticular disease). CDD results in sacs (diverticula) that protrude externally from the colon wall. To see them highlighted in grey see image C001/1836. These sacs may become inflamed, infected and may even rupture. They are common with age and result in fever, vomiting and pain. Treatment requires antibiotic drugs. More severe cases may require surgery to remove part of the colon (colectomy).
