'HM the Empress Eugénie', c1879. Caricature portrait of Empress Eugenie de Montijo (1826-1920), wife of Napoleon III of France. She is in mourning next to a bust of her son who died in 1879: A heart as full of sorrow as the sea of sands, a quote from William Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona. With the death of Eugénie's only child, Napoleon IV, Prince Imperial (1856-1879), died also the last dynastic hope for the restoration of the Bonapartes to the French throne.
