The Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Roman), Bucharest, Romania, Europe, EU

TThe neoclassic Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Roman) is a magnificent and prestigious concert hall resembling an ancient temple, combining baroque and some ionic features. It was built as detached mansion house, building standing alone by the French architect Albert Galleron in 1886-1888 but the people of Romania donated "a leu for the Athenaeum" in public collection to fund its construction. The statue in front of the Athenaeum is Mihai Eminescu, the greatest Romanian poet whose literary work was often borrowed as lyrics by Romanian composers.
