House built onto town walls in Spalt, Franconia, Bavaria, Germany.
Bizarre-romantic half timbered house, whose western wall is identical with the city wall. A walled up Gothic gate is still recognizable, which was used by knights as access to the city. Spalt is a charming little town located in the middle of the Franconian Lake District (Fränkisches Seenland). It originally grew up around a Benedictine abbey founded in 800 AD. Parts of the original medieval town walls, towers and gates still bear witness to Spalt´s eventful history. The well-preserved Old Town is a lovely place for a stroll, with winding alleys and lovely Baroque town houses. Among the most prominent features are the old half-timbered “hops houses” with their mighty gabled roofs. These roofs were used for drying and storing the hops grown in the surrounding region, which used to be the town´s most important trading commodity
