Red deer calf (Cervus elaphus) suckling from its mother. The red deer usually gives birth to a single calf in late May or early June, after a gestation of around eight months. Apart from during the breeding season in the autumn, male and female red deer generally stay apart in separate herds. Stags live in \bachelor groups\" of unrelated males, and females live in groups of a mother and her daughters. The red deer inhabits grassland, moorland and wooded areas, and feeds on shrubs, grasses and leaves. It is the largest native land animal in the UK, and when fully grown a male can stand over metres tall. Photographed on Exmoor, Somerset, UK."
