Memphis, the Alabaster Sphinx


Egypt, Memphis, the Alabaster Sphinx. Nearby Saqqara is the site of the world's oldest step pyramid, it is situated some 30 km. south of Cairo. It was designed for King Djoser by Imhotep who now has a museum there. While Memphis was the capital Saqqara was its necropolis, it was surpassed by Giza (cairo) and the Valley of the Kings. It remained an important place for burials during Ptolemaic and into Roman also houses the pyramid texts the precurser of the New Kingdom Book of the Dead.
