In one case on theContinent a geared engine had tohaul such a load up a steep incline3 miles in length, the speeds are 2to 4 miles an hour, will be readily seen that the or-dinary contractors locomotive laboursunder special disadvantages whentaken in relation to either of theabove speeds, because it is just at atime when ascending an incline thatthe full power is required, and thenthe velocity of the piston does notmuch exceed 100 feet per m
