Mitchell, of South Britain, is well known as aman of principle and strict integrity, temperate in all things, and anactive and influential official member of the Congregational was born in Soutb Britain March 12, 1846, and received an aca-demic education at The Gunnery, in Washington, Ct., and atOcean Institute, Oceanport, N. J. He is an earnest republican, andchairman of the town committee. He was a delegate to the conven-tion that nominated Hon. P. C. Lounsbury to tbe gubernatorial office,and in 1887 was elected by a good majority to represent the town of. GEO. W MITCHELL. MITCHELL. 149 Soutbbury in the General Assembly, although the previous year thetown was democratic by twenty-eight majority. He is a merchantalthough owning a farm not far from the center of the place. He alsospends a portion of his time in Kansas, looking after the affairs of theGoodrich Land & Cattle Co., of which he is president and a director. William Anderson, in The Scottish Nation, says: Mitchell, asurname from the Anglo-Saxon Michel, signifying great; or it maybe from the German Mit-schuler, a disciple, literally with a Danish Modschiold means carriage-shield. The crest of theMitchells is a hand holding a pen; motto, Favente deo supero. Armorial General, Eietsl ap,, says : Mitchell de Westshore—Ecosse (Baronet, 19 juin 1724).
