Sauvetage du MV BENITA - Le Bouchon, juin-juillet 2016.

8 months after the sinking of the MV Benita off the Bouchon in the southeastern region of the country, fishing is still impracticable in the lagoon. This was revealed yesterday by the Minister of the Ocean Economy, Prem Koonjoo. (…) With questions from Le Mauricien, the minister invited a scientist from his ministry to explain the situation. “After regular analyzes, there are still traces of heavy metals – including arsenic – in the fish of the region,” he said. If there are traces of contamination in fish, sea water, on the other hand, “is not polluted,” added the ministry’s expert. (…) As a reminder, the MV Benita, who came from South Africa, is stranded on the reefs of the Bouchon on June 17, 2016 with, on board, more than 125 tons of oil. An Oil Spill Contingency Plan was then deployed by the Mauritius Ports Authority and the Ministry of the Environment to contain any pollution. At the origin of the sinking was a fight between the crew members. After being refloated, the ship, which was heading to India for demolition, sank nautical miles from Mauritius on July 30, at Le Bouchon more than a year after the MV BENITA sinking
