The Old Universalist Church, PortsmouthDedicated 1808 10, 1773, and awakening a strong in-terest in his doctrine, so that occa-sional services were held there until1777, when regular services were com-menced, the same being held in thehouse of one George ]\Iassey, withNoah Parker, a resident of the town,as the preacher. The cause flourished and the soci-ety increased, so that it was shortlyfound necessary to use the Dearbornschoolhouse for the meetings. Subse-quently the Sandermanian meetinghouse was secured, and there services w^ere held till 1784, during which yearthe society erected a building for itsown use, on Vaughan St., which itproceeded to occupy. The societywas incorporated by the GeneralCourt in 1793, Daniel Rindge,Thomas Martin, Jonathan M. Sewalland Martin Parry being named in theact of incorporation, and the societywas duly organized on July 29, ofthat year as the Universalist Societyof Portsmouth.
