In person Mr. Jefferson was tall and thin, ratherabove six feet in height, but well formed; his eyeswere light, his hair originally red, in after life becamewhite and silvery; his complexion was fair, his fore-head broad, and his whole countenance intelligent andthoughtful. He possessed great fortitude of mind aswell as personal courage; and his command of tem-per was such that his oldest and most intimate friendsnever recollected to have seen him in a manners, though dignified, were simple and un-affected, and his hospitality was so unbounded thatall found at his house a ready welcome. In conver-sation he was fluent, eloquent and enthusiastic ; andhis language was remarkably pure and correct.
