INTRODUCTION TO WOMANS DEPARTMENT. 441 The provision of the Act of Congress that the Board of LadyManagers appoint a jury of her peers to pass judgment uponwomans work was the most siornificant feature of the innovation ofthe Boards creation, for never before had it been thought necessaryto apply this fundamental principle of justice to our sex. Theunusual privilege has been duly valued by the Board, and will beexerted to the utmost in the interests of w^omen. And in the same. DECORATION OF WOMANS connection may be mentioned an additional privilege, securedthrough the application of the Board to Congress. This is thebestowal upon women artisans of duplicate awards. There is noprecedent for this. Up to the present time, at all former exposi-tions, the great firms supplying the materials from which exhibitswere made had received the reward; and the humble worker,whose intelligence and skill had fashioned the beautiful or usefulthing, remained unrecognized.
