Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist. He became the leading court painter in England and is renowned for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family. Among his other works are Portrait of the Artist's Wife, Duke of Richmond, and The Artist (a self-portrait). This painting, titled Prince D'Arenberg, is characteristic of one of the most popular phases of Van Dyck's art. It exhibits his sense of appropriateness as far as the setting of a portrait is concerned. The background has been chosen largely with a view to accentuating the salient points of the picture, yet at the same t ime is treated in a bold and vigorous manner.
