Mendelian inheritance. Computer artwork showing the possible genetic outcomes for the offspring of parents that are both heterozygous (have two different alleles, or forms, of the gene) for the selected trait. The blue allele is dominant over the recessive green allele. Each parent passes on one allele to their offspring. Which allele is passed on is randomly selected. Three quarters of their offspring will receive at least one dominant allele, and therefore display the characteristic (phenotype) of this allele. One quarter of the offspring will receive two recessive copies of the allele and display the recessive characteristic.
