Micronycteris, a frugivorous bat from Trinidad (1982). Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight; their fore limbs have developed into wings. The wing membrane is a continuation of the epidermis, it is very elastic and interlaced with fine muscle fibres, nerves, and blood vessels. The senses of smell and taste are well developed in fruit bats such as this one. They are guided by their sense of smell to fruit-bearing trees on their nocturnal flights. These bats also have a variety of scent glands on their bodies which play a role in their social and sexual life; this is indicative of a well developed sense of smell.
