According to Norse mythology, the Valkyries were the daughters or attendants of Odin, the chief god (also called Wotan). The Norse believed the Valkyries came to battlefield, chose those who would die, and carried them back to Valhalla. In this painting titled "Hero's Farewell" by 19th-century Swedish artist Marten Eskil Winge, who was known for his Norse mythology legendary hero Orvar Odd bids farewell to Hjalmar after the fight on Samso against the sons of Arngrim. Hjalmar was mortally wounded by Angantyr with his cursed sword Tyrfing.
