No attempt has yetbeen made to collect a heavy insurance policy on his life, and the case thus farbids fair to remain an impenetrable mystery. On the night of August 2, 1879, one of the bridge watchmen, while tight-ening a screw on the eastern diaw-pier, was thrown off his balance by thewrench slipping and fell headlong into the river. Fortunately, being a stoutswimmer, notwithstanding his clothing, he kept afloat in the raging eddies andcurrent till rescued in a state of utter exhaustion, off W. J. Youngs lowermill, just in time to prevent being swept into the broad channel
