As the fastest bird in the world, the peregrine falcon has no trouble catching up with its victim. SAN DIEGO, USA: A PHOTOGRAPHER has captured the incredible moment a peregrine falcon attacks a pelican in mid-air - before riding on its back. One image showed the two pound falcon seemingly riding on the eight pound pelican?s foot-long bill as it tackled the huge bird mid-flight. Another image featured the formidable bird of prey inches away from embedding its razor sharp claws into the pelican?s head. Photographer Diane Wu from San Diego, USA, captured the amazing images on Torrey Pines state beach in San Diego, with the encounter lasting just three seconds. Female peregrine falcons are known to attack larger birds, including pelicans, when their nests come under threat from birds looking for eggs. The images were captured on a Nikon D850 camera with a 500mm Phase Fresnel lens from just two-hundred feet away on the beach at the bottom of the cliffs. Travelling up to 240 miles per hour when diving, the peregrine falcon is the fastest bird in the world and is able to use its speed, power, and agility to attack and even kill birds multiple times its size. / Diane WuSAN DIEGO, USA: A PHOTOGRAPHER has captured the incredible moment a peregrine falcon attacks a pelican in mid-air - before riding on its back.
