Chemical engineering . witch No. I is closed at the beginning ELECTROCHEMICAL AND METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY. [Vol, III. No. i. of a revolution of the handle, and then switch No. 3, whichconnects switch No. i with the primary of the , switch No. 2 is closed, throwing in a preventive re-sistance, which connects the leads going from switch I toswitch 3 and switch 2 to switch 4, respectively. Then switch4 is closed, cutting out the first section in the primary of themain transformer. The preventive resistance is shown inFig. 6. mounted on the wall beside the cables coming from themain transformer. The object of using tlie preventive re-sistance is to avoid the serious sparking that w-ould occur ifthe circuit was opened at any time during the revolution ofthe handle. When the handle of the regulator is in the normalposition as shown m Figs. 6 ana 7, the resistance is cut out sothat no section or sections will be short-circuated the ne.\t revolution of the handle another section of the. FIG. 7.—OIL SWITCH REGULATOR. primary of the main transformer is cut out, and so on. Thusthe oil-switch regulator cuts out eight sections altogether, switches l and 2 simply serving to make the changes. As the change is voltage produced in the secondary of themain transformer by cutting out one of the sections of theprimary would be too great for the carborundum furnaces, theauto transformer and series transformer are used to regu-late the voltage between the main steps. The sections of theauto transformer are cut out by means of the oil-drum switchshown in Fig. 8. This also is provided with a preventive re-sistance and the reversing switch, shown in the figure. Thereversing switch is provided with an interlocking device whichprevents reversing when the main drum is in any but the offposition. There are 15 sections in the auto transformer. Inthis way, by the combination of big steps in the main trans-former and a scries of small steps obtained witli the autotra
