Thyroid follicles, light micrograph. This is a semi-thin section ( micrometres thick) stained with silver and embedded in a synthetic resin. Several thyroid follicles are seen with homogeneous central colloid filling the entire follicular cavity, and surrounded by a cubic to prismatic epithelium. Unlike routine histological techniques in which colloid artifacts are the rule, the use of improved fixation and embedding in this material provides a perfect picture of the structure of the thyroid follicles. The dark brown granulations present in the thyrocyte cytoplasm are lysosomes. Surrounding the follicles are abundant blood capillaries. Magnification: x900 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
