A selection of ornamental bronze animals at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello (Bargello National Museum) is one of the oldest public buildings in Florence dating from 1255. It is on Palazzo del Bargello in Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy. The animals were made for the garden of the Medici Villa of Castello. Today, they are on display in the Loggia or open corridor under the vaulted ceilings, restored from when the building was divided into walled prison cells. During the 18th century, the museum served as the city’s prison. The Bargello Museum opened as a national museum in 1865 and has the largest Italian collection of 14–17th century Gothic and Renaissance sculptures.
